Seal Bay Guided Tours

Seal Bay has been home to an Australian sea lion population for thousands of years, and offers one of the most exceptional nature-based experiences in the world.

There are no enclosures or cages at Seal Bay. Instead, you will be taken into the heart of the colony where our experienced guides will teach you about these endangered animals. If you prefer, you can set your own pace on the wheelchair accessible 900 metre (return) boardwalk which meanders through the dunes to a number of viewing platforms.

Australian sea lions are unique to South Australia and Western Australia. They are an endangered species – their total population is about 12,000. Seal Bay is the third largest colony of this magnificent, wild creature.

Flinders Chase National Park

Flinders Chase National Park is now open following the 2019-20 summer bushfires, which burnt 96 per cent of the park (and the Ravine Des Casoars Wilderness Protection Area). The park is open for self-drive visitors to share in the bushfire recovery journey. On your visit, you can stop at the iconic tourist drawcards of Remarkable Rocks, Weirs Cove, Cape du Couedic lighthouse and Admirals Arch. You’ll have access to drive a safe route along Cape du Couedic Road. Entry fees apply. Purchase your tickets online at www.parks.sa.gov.au

Remember to pack enough water and snacks for your visit, and to leave no trace. This will give our bushland the best chance of recovery. The park has limited toilets, there is no food or drink available for purchase throughout the park. Pets, including dogs, are not permitted in the park.
Food can be purchased on the way at Vivonne Bay store

Admirals Arch is a natural rock arch created by amazing forces of nature It’s situated within Flinders Chase National Park on Kangaroo Island. You can take an easy walk on a boardwalk around the cliff face. This leads you to a viewing platform overlooking the arch. The arch is sculpted by weathering and erosion from the sea over thousands of years.

Fur-seals often play among the rocks. These dark brown seals feed at sea but return to land to rest and breed. In summer, each of the large males establishes a territory with a number of females. You can often see Fur-seal pups playing near the rock pools beneath the arch.

Perched above the sea in Flinders Chase National Park, the impressive Remarkable Rocks form what appear to be a cluster of precariously balanced granite boulders.

This stunning work of nature has been shaped by the erosive forces of wind, sea spray and rain over some 500 million years. The golden orange lichen covering some of the rocks offers visitors wonderful photo opportunities at different times of the day. Interpretation signs share the story of how these intriguing rocks were formed.

There is a viewing platform providing a vantage point for disabled access. The area also provides an excellent vantage point for viewing the photogenic Casuarina Islets.

Walking and Hiking on Kangaroo Island

Walking and Hiking opportunities on Kangaroo Island have changed since January 2020. With the bushfires through Flinders Chase National Park, Ravine des Casoars Wilderness Protection Area, Kelly Hill Caves Conservation Park, and Western River Wilderness Protection area, many of the trails within those parks have been damaged. None more so than the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail.

While many people would gravitate to our more well know walks, Kangaroo Island still boasts 19 other walks and trails spread across the landscape that have not been affected by fire.

From easy walk, run or cycle trails within townships, to art sculpture trails, where the trail itself forms part of the art, to Conservation Park trails where nature and wildlife are endless.  Don’t forget our historical trails, where you can follow the amazing story of the Islands forbearers.

Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail
See www.kangarooislandsculpturetrail.com.au
In Penneshaw, starting on the foreshore, this interesting easy walking trail wanders around ancient blackthorn bush, home to wallabies. Art installations can be seen through a changing landscape. Within the trail is a pedestrian swing bridge built by the Sculpture Park Volunteers and is a beautiful piece of engineering art.

Fish Cannery walk
This beautiful walk takes you through the spectacular bush along the coast on the northern side of American River, to the fish cannery ruins built in the 1890’s.  This is a lovely walk, and on the return, take the beach route to take in the oyster lease and abundant marine and birdlife.

Prospect Hill
You can’t miss Prospect Hill.  Matthew Flinders climbed Prospect Hill when navigating the north coast of KI.  Climb to the same stunning panoramic point to view Pennington Bay and Pelican Lagoon, albeit with state-of-the-art staircase.  A short drive from The Deck.
